There were times when I wanted to shake them both, and I had trouble believing in Taliesin's reasons for continuing to stay away from Eleanor. Each of them believes that their love is unrequited. Now, years later, he and Eleanor reunite on a mission to find her birth family. He left home as a very young man and made his own fortune. Although Taliesin is not really the step-son of the house, he has been mentored since childhood by Eleanor's adoptive father, who employs him as a servant and lets him sleep in the barn (his chores include emptying ashes from the hearth). Imagine a male Cinderella who falls in love with his eldest step-sister. Although it may not have been intentional (and the book is not marketed this way), this is a twisted Cinderella story. This wasn't my favorite book in the series, but Katharine Ashe always gives me something interesting to think about in her novels.
